Biography

A career built entirely inside e-commerce

Kobayashi-san is a veteran of the e-commerce industry, with a career spanning two decades of building and scaling digital commerce businesses across Japan and Southeast Asia. He joined Commerce21, Ltd in Japan in 2000, starting on the sales team at a time when e-commerce as a discipline was still being defined, and rose quickly to CEO. Under his leadership, he turned the company from a loss-making operation into a profitable, leading e-commerce solutions provider in Japan — a turnaround built on understanding not just the technology, but how major retail brands actually needed to digitalise their operations to compete online. That understanding won Commerce21 marquee clients including Uniqlo, Mizuno, Coach, and Toys “R” Us, each requiring platforms robust enough to handle enterprise-scale retail traffic and complexity.

It was during this period that he began working closely with Danny Khow, then running SeenerGy in Malaysia, on e-commerce platform development for Japanese brands entering or scaling in the region — an early, hands-on experience in what cross-border digital commerce actually demands operationally, not just strategically. When the opportunity came to bring that depth of e-commerce and digitalisation experience into Malaysia’s market directly, Kobayashi-san saw it as exactly the kind of entrepreneurial challenge he wanted next, partnering with Danny to found Bridzia Sdn Bhd in 2012. Since then, he has continued to shape Bridzia’s approach to enterprise e-commerce with the same principle that defined his time at Commerce21: platforms have to be built for how a business actually operates, not just how a demo looks.
